But why would the boss want it that way in the first place?

So they didn’t bring them to court? They just chased the owner a little and gave up? What a joke

As a woman, I was in the quick lube work for 6 years, and I was darned good at it and also fast on my feet. But It would blow your ever-loving mind what goes on in some of those places.

While working at Quaker State Minit Lube, I was going to report an inside theft racket going on, to higher management. I certainly didn't want them to suspect me, if/when they found out about it. My boss accidentally discovered that I was going to talk to his boss (who happened to like and respect me). Well, my boss stopped me before I could, and told me that if I ever tried to go above his head again, he would cut my hours down to practically nothing.

On top of that, the crew would almost never check the power steering fluid properly, and would call out that it was "full". So sometimes when a concerned customer would be driving out of the building, I would stop them, lift their hood, and check it the _right_ way (by wiping the stick dry FIRST to get an accurate reading). Every single time I did this, their power steering fluid would indeed be low. And yes, I did take into consideration the temperature of the engine.

They would sell air filters to customers who didn't need them. In fact, many of those air filters looked clean as a whistle! I was made to try and do this too, but little did they know that while I was showing it to the customer, I was actually telling them that their air filter was just fine (which was the truth), and I'd report back to the crew that the customer wanted them to just blow it out for them.

They would also save oil that still looked clean that they'd just drained from a newer car, and pour it into empty Pennzoil or Quaker State oil bottles and use that for a customer who they knew was "cool" and would be paying cash. That money would then go into the crew's pockets. However, this customer would not know that used oil was being put back into their car's engine.

In addition, they would save those used clean-looking air filters that they took from the cars, and sell them as new, then keep the cash.

My boss started cutting my hours, anyway, because he knew what was going on, all along, and I think he was afraid that I might end up telling, anyway. Well, I finally found another job to replace it. In fact, it was one of the customers who helped me to get it, and he became one of my new employers as well as a close friend. 💕✔️

P.S. - This was almost three decades ago. And the last time I checked, that large oil change business went out of business.
